For Parents Only: The El Encanto in Santa Barbara

Estimated read time 2 min read

Taking trips with the kids creates memories that will last a lifetime. Blah, blah, blah. But taking a trip with JUST your lover is equally important. It gives the two of you a chance to recharge and relax and maybe, if the Gods allow, a chance to sleep in. That’s why we’ll be chronicling our favorite FPO spots—For Parents Only. These places are perfect for doing what you've been dying to do since you've had kids–absolutely nothing.

BELMOND EL ENCANTO SANTA BARBARA

Rest: In a private bungalow. The historic hotel, tucked high up in the hills of Santa Barbara, Calif., was originally built in 1918 but it recently emerged from a multi-million dollar makeover. Now, each of its 92 bungalows (22 of them are suites) have been updated to the most modern luxury standards. Touches we loved include the heated bathroom floors, the massive soaking tub, the Aqua di Parma toiletries and the monogrammed pillowcases with our initials.

Relax: In the Spa at El Encanto. Each of the seven treatment rooms are some of the prettiest spa rooms we've ever seen. Treatments range from signature massages ($150) with various add-ons ($70) to the utterly decadant 80-minute four hands massage. ($460.) Active organic facials start at $170.

Reunite: Over drinks at The Terrace during sunset. Take in the incredible views of Santa Barbara and Pacific Ocean while sipping on signature cocktails like the Blood Orange Margarita ($14) or the Elle Martini, made with blueberry vodka. ($16.)

Refuel: At The Dining Room for dinnner. This is California coastal cuisine at its finest, with Pan Seared Diver Scallops ($37), Short Rib Sous Vide ($32) and prime-cut USDA steaks (starting at $48.) Don't forget the truffle fries and try the jalapeno creamed corn, too. ($8.)

Rediscover: Your long-dormant idle side of yourself. Lounge at the pool or wander the grounds at your leisure. There's no schedule here.

Rates: $617 a night in early October.

Note: The resort is actually very family-friendly so if you see a couple toting a baby around the grounds, smile sympathetically at them and then get back to your martini.
