THE LOS ANGELES ZOO

Why we love it: The LA zoo, owned by the City of Los Angeles, is located in the northeast corner of Griffith Park in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, far from the beaches and the bright lights of Hollywood. But the zoo has plenty of space, about 133 acres, for its 1,100 mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles to hang out.

What Ages?: All ages! The grounds are very stroller and wheelchair friendly, but the zoo is very spread out. Just something to keep in mind when bringing wee ones. A Safari Shuttle does wind through the park so you don't have to trek it the whole time. Tickets are an additional cost but you can get on and off as often as you'd like.

What to See?: The Elephants of Asia; Campo Gorilla Reserve; The LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles) and the Winnick Family Children's Zoo.

When to Go?: The weather in Los Angeles makes the zoo a great year-round attraction but the summer months can get very hot, as can September and October. Bring sunscreen, wear loose clothes, and keep yourselves hydrated. An update on the exhibits–The zoo opened its Rainforest of the Americas exhibit last April and plans on opening a new exhibit for their jaguars in early 2015, if you're interested in that.

How Much Does It Cost?: You can buy tickets online here. They are $19 for adults and $14 for children ages 2-12. Parking is free (practically unheard of in Los Angeles!) but you can pay an extra $6 for Preferred Parking close to the entrance.
