You’re in Luck: There’s a Playground at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas

Estimated read time 2 min read

Playgrounds at airports are few and far but Trips + Giggles will be making note of them where we see them. Know of a cool airport playground? Let us know!

We've already looked at The Beach inside Los Angeles Airport's dazzling new international terminal. Now we're onto the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.

Located at the D Gates, where American Airlines, Delta, Hawaiian, United and US Air fly out of, the simply named “Kids Area” features two airplane themed climbing structures–a mini-control tower and a jet engine. On the wall, are five colorful, tiled murals drawn by students from the city's Inner-City Games.

Most importantly, the play area overlooks the runway where kids can watch the jets land and takeoff.

Believe it or not, there are loads of family-friendly things to do in Las Vegas. We recommend staying away from the crowded and debaucherous Strip and heading for either The Red Rock in Summerlin or the JW Marriott, both of which are very family-friendly. However, you should definitely make trips into Vegas proper for the following:

  • The Container Park: In Downtown Las Vegas, a new shopping center has risen with the stores that are built from old shipping containers. On site is a treehouse playground for kids, with a 33-foot slide.
  • The Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay: The aquarium has over 100 sharks (some scary, most of them not so much) and tons of fish with  two walk-through tunnels to stare at them. Once you're done, you can “pet” the stingrays.
  • Springs Preserve: A sprawling nature and science center that sits on 180 acres, you can explore botanical gardens, hiking, trails, and then get the sillies out at the Old West-style playground.
  • Hershey's World at NY NY: Yes, that Hershey. Located at the New York, New York Hotel & Casino, the two-story chocolate bonanza sells all the Hershey's products, along with a giant chocolate Statue of Liberty, and tons of souvenirs from plushies to keychains, mugs and as VegasChatter uncovered, chocolate-flavored lip balm.
  • The High Roller: We recommend taking your older kids and going in the day or very early in the night, before the crowds get too crazy. But at either time, the sights of Las Vegas from the tallest observation wheel in the world (550 feet high!) will thrill everyone.
