We spent six days in Maui at the end of June 2023, staying at three different resorts, checking out a few others and doing a bunch of random island activities with the kids. The next month, the devastating fire in Lahaina upended the entire island, leaving so many families and individuals without homes.
As the entire island continues to recover, we feel the next best way we can offer support to Maui, after donations to the relief efforts, is to highlight a few of the hotels and places that make this island one of our favorites to visit. So this is what this Maui Strong series is about. If you’re interested in visiting Maui and need help planning your trip, let us know.
The Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea, Maui has consistently been a go-to favorite for families with babies or very young children. The main reason why? The resort’s rooms are actually all-suites, meaning parents can have a door that separates the living room from their bedroom so that they don’t have to go to sleep when the baby does.
But for families with older children like tweens and teens, the newly renovated oceanfront villas at Fairmont Kea Lani provide a respite from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the resort.
The two-story villas have two entrances, one at the top near the pools and another down below near the beach path. Entering from the top, you’ll encounter a massive primary suite with a full bathroom, a walk-in closet and a private patio. Heading downstairs you’ll find a full kitchen, a bedroom with two full beds, a full bathroom and a spacious living area with a pull-out bed in the sofa. There’s also a washer and dryer at the back.
But best of all, there’s another private patio with a small swimming pool (it’s only about 3 feet deep) and an outdoor grill and dining area. All this is within steps of the beach, making it easy for people to come and go as they please. This is an especially excellent option for folks who want to maximize their beach time, although you do sacrifice a little bit of privacy. Just make sure to keep your curtains closed while changing upstairs. Lol!
If the pool is more important to your family as it was for our kids, then stick to one of the suites in the main tower or opt for connecting rooms with patios that face out to the pool. The good news is that all the suites at the Fairmont Kea Lani have been renovated with modern Hawaiian touches so wherever you end up, you’ll be in a nice and new room.
