We've been cooking up a storm this summer from cake pops to churros, smoothies, pizzas and more. But for this latest at-home-for-the-summer project, we were able to make food for other people.
In Los Angeles, there's an informal kindness drive going on where volunteers make lunches that get distributed by the Hollywood Food Coalition to 22 different organizations throughout the city as a way to help feed those in need.
Making lunches is always a dreaded task during the school year but since we don't need to do that for the foreseeable future, making ten lunches was easy. Even better, we could include the kids!
We've asked the kids to help us with charitable events and drives before but sometimes they've been too young to understand what was going on. But at 9 and almost 8, and educated in the effects of the pandemic, my two older ones easily comprehended how making lunches for those who needed them was the right thing to do. And hopefully, in years to come, they will take up these initiatives on their own.
The lunch drive is a bit of an informal project, but if you live in Los Angeles, there are several places to drop off the lunches throughout the city. Here's a link to the locations. The day for dropoff is Sunday and anytime before 11am. (Although, given the hot temperature, the closer to 11am the better.)
The lunch bags should include a sandwich, drink, fruit, chip, bar, napkin and if possible, a note. The bags must be labeled with the type of sandwich and you can let the kids go wild decorating with stickers or their own artwork.
