Legoland California has long been one of our favorite theme parks because it's so much more mellow than other theme parks. It also helps that Legoland is spread out and even on the busiest days, you don't feel like cattle as you go from ride to ride.
Another part of Legoland that we like? Easy access to the Legoland Water Park which is located inside the park and not like, down the road somewhere. And if you've never been to a water park with the kids, this water park is a good “starter” park.

We recently hit up the water park here with our kids (ages 8 and 6) and here's what you need to know:
1. You'll need a Legoland park ticket first. You can't just buy a Water Park ticket. You need to buy the Legoland + Water Park ticket which averages about $112. However, you can buy the Legoland ticket and then if you decide you want to go to the water park, you can upgrade on the spot for $30.
2. Go right when it opens. The water park usually opens around 10am in the summer months. There will often be a queue of people waiting to get in, mostly so they can get pool chairs in desired spots.

3. Bring your own towels. Yup. You need your own towels or else you'll be buying thin ones with Legoland logo on them for about $20. The park does sell sunscreen, flip-flops, floaties and any other pool gear you may have forgotten.
4. Consider a locker rental. We were told by a seasoned pro of Legoland to get a locker and at first, we pooh-poohed the suggestion but he was right. We got a locker and we kept our belongings safe and secure as we went on the water park rides. Best of all, we still could use it while we went back into the main Legoland park.
5. Don't forget your flip-flops. You might think you won't need them, but flip flops come in handy as you walk across the hot pavement from ride to ride. Thoughtfully, Legoland has placed little shoe cubbies near the pools and rides so you can drop of your shoes while you float, splash or slide. Water shoes for little ones are a good idea too.
Disclosure: We attended the water park as a media guest of Legoland for the opening of their new Duplo Playtown. But we've attended Legoland before on our own and it is still one of our favorite theme parks.
